Kind words

“Rodney de Vries is one of the most accomplished luthiers in Canada. His long experience and his fine attention to detail combine to make his instruments soar in their high range, and rich and resonant in their lower range.”

— Jennifer Johnson, Newfoundland and Labrador Symphony Violinist, teacher, and Licensed Body Mapping Educator, ABME

“Strings players in St John's and Memorial University are incredibly fortunate to have someone of Rodney's expertise and training in our community. He has made a number of the beautiful instruments owned by our students, and currently there is a violin and viola he made in the University's "Prestige Instrument Collection". In addition to being an invaluable resource for instrument repairs and accessories, Rodney is extremely helpful and always committed to helping musicians sound their best.”

— Nancy Dahn, violinist in Duo Concertante, and Violin Professor at MUN

I've been going to Rodney ever since he arrived in town, and the service he has provided to me and my students at Memorial University has been wonderful. From gluing seams and rehairing bows, to significant repairs and facilitating some of my current and former students with their instruments he has been such an invaluable resource to our community.  Not only this, he makes his own beautiful sounding violins and cellos. We are so lucky to have him here!

— Vernon Regehr, Cellist and Cello Professor at MUN

“When my violin had water damage I thought it was done for, soaking wet for days. But I called Rodney and he not only repaired it, but gave it back to me sounding better than ever before. I can't say enough about how grateful I am for his skill and his ongoing support for St John's string playing community. We are so lucky to have him.”

— Lauren Smee, violinist in the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and teacher

A treasured member of St John's Arts Community – what can I say about Rodney? Impeccable workmanship – masterful skill – exacting standards – meticulous care over every repair, no matter how small, and kind and generous with his knowledge to professionals, amateurs and students alike. Strings players in St John's are blessed to have him here. We can all leave our instruments and bows in Rodney's capable hands, serene in the knowledge that they will be returned to us looking, sounding and playing their best. Those of us who have one of his beautiful bespoke instruments are lucky indeed!

— Christina Smith, player of violin, cello and viol, and teacher of many years
